LIL' DARLIN' BABY HAT with ear flaps

11/26/05 I'd like to thank Lonna for testing this pattern for me. She said "I just finished the Lil' Darlin Baby Hat with earflaps and the pattern seems fine to me."
SIZE: 17" circumference, use J/10 6mm hook (pictured)
14" circumference, use G/6 4mm hook
16" circumference, use H/8 5mm hook
YARN: Bernat Softee Baby, 100% "Gentle Soft" Acrylic; 1/2 oz, 50 yds
HOOK: J for 17" (pictured)
for smaller hat use G for 14"; H for 16" or
GAUGE: 7 dc = 2" with J hook;
4 rows with J hook = 5 1/2";with G hook = 4 1/2"; with H hook = 5";
SKILL: easy
SUPPLIES: blunt needle, scissors, stitch markers (optional), tape measure
STITCHES: chain, single crochet, slip stitch; double crochet; half double crochet; shell
ABBREVIATIONS: ch = chain; sc = single crochet; sl st = slip stitch; hdc = half double crochet; sc2tog = single crochet 2 together; st = stitch; sts = stitches; ea = each; sk = skip;
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
SHELL = 5 double crochets all in the same stitch or space
sc2tog = insert hook in next st, pull yarn thru, insert hook in next st, pull yarn thru, yo pull yarn thru all 3 loops.
INSTRUCTIONS
ROUND 1: ch 3, 11 dc in first ch. Join in first dc, place a marker in the join for this round only. (12 dc)
TIP: Count your stitches before you join the round. Count beginning chain as a dc, but do not join rounds in the beginning chain. Joining in the first real dc instead of the starting chain gives a seamless appearance to the hat.
ROUND 2: ch 2, 2 dc in same st as join, *2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around. End with 1 dc in the join of the previous round (remove marker). Join in the first dc. (24 dc)
ROUND 3: ch 2, 2 dc in same st as join, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st. *repeat from * around. (36 dc)
ROUND 4: ch 2, 2 dc in same st as join, *dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around, end with 1 dc in last st. Join in first dc. (48 dc)
TIP: with G hook piece should measure 4 1/2"; with H hook piece should measure 5"; with J hook, piece should measure 5 1/2".
ROUND 5: ch 2, 4 dc in same st as join,
*sk next 2 sts,
sc in next st,
sk next 2 sts,
5 dc in next st. Repeat from * around.
End with sk next 2 sts, sc in next st, sk next 2 sts. Join in first dc. (8 shells)
ROUND 6: sl st in next st, ch 1, sc in same st,
*sk 2 dc,
5 dc in next sc,
sk 2 dc,
sc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join in first sc. (8 shells)
ROUND 7: Repeat round 5
ROUND 8: Repeat round 6
ROUND 9: Repeat round 5
ROUND 10: Repeat round 6
ROUND 11: Repeat round 5.
FIRST EAR FLAP
ROW 1: sl st in next st, ch 1, sc in same st,
sc in next st,
hdc in next 3 sts,
sc in next 2 sts. ch 1, turn (7 scs)
ROW 2: sc in next 7 sts. ch 1, turn (7 sc)
ROW 3: Repeat row 2. ch 1, turn (7 sc)
ROW 4: sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog. ch 1, turn (5 sc)
TIP: sc2tog = insert hook in next st, pull yarn thru, insert hook in next st, pull yarn thru, yo pull yarn thru all 3 loops. Sc2tog is a decrease.
ROW 5: sc2tog, sc in next st, sc2tog. ch 1, turn (3 sc)
ROW 6: sc2tog, sc in next st. ch 1, turn (2 sc)
ROW 7: sc2tog. (1 sc)
FIRST TIE
ch 25 (for tie) sl st in 2nd ch from hook,
sl st in next 23 chs, turn, sl st in sc.
fasten off and weave in ends.
2nd EAR FLAP
ROW 1: sk next 17 sts on hat, attach yarn in next st,
ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next st,
hdc in next 3 sts,
sc in next 2 sts, ch 1 turn.
ROWS 2 thru 7: same as first ear flap
2nd tie, same as first tie.
